What is a central heating system?

One heat source for the whole house, with the heat carried to every room.

The boiler heats water. A gas boiler, or increasingly a heat pump, warms the water in a sealed loop of pipework.

A pump carries it round. The hot water is pumped through pipes under the floors to radiators, towel rails or underfloor heating, gives up its heat to the room, and comes back to be heated again.

Controls decide when and where. A thermostat tells the boiler when the house needs heat, and radiator valves set the temperature room by room. Good controls are the difference between a comfortable house and an expensive one.

Wet or dry? Almost every London home has a wet system, meaning water in pipes and radiators. Dry, ducted warm-air systems are common in the US but rare here, so a wet system is what we design and install.

Central heating installations we carry out

Whether it is a whole new system or one extra radiator, it is sized for the room and balanced with the rest of the house, so nothing runs hot while the far bedroom stays cold.

Complete central heating systems

A full wet system from scratch: boiler, pipework, radiators and controls, designed around a room-by-room heat loss calculation rather than a guess. For houses that have never had central heating, extensions, loft conversions and full renovations.

  • Heat loss calculated room by room
  • Pipework sized and run neatly
  • Flushed, inhibited and filtered

Radiators

New and replacement radiators, from standard panels to column and designer styles. Each one is sized for the room it heats, so a cold bedroom gets a radiator that can actually warm it, not just whatever fits under the window.

  • Sized to the room
  • Panel, column and designer
  • Moved or added where you need them

Towel radiators

A heated towel rail on the central heating, or dual fuel with an electric element so it still works in summer when the heating is off. Fitted plumb and level, with valves that match the finish.

  • Chrome, black and anthracite
  • Dual fuel options
  • Valves matched to the finish

Underfloor heating

Wet underfloor heating runs warm water through pipes under the floor, so the whole floor becomes the heat source and there are no radiators on the walls. Ideal for kitchen extensions and new floors, and it runs efficiently at lower water temperatures.

  • Wet systems on your boiler
  • Manifold and zone controls
  • Pressure tested before screeding

Smart radiator valves

Thermostatic and smart radiator valves let every room run at its own temperature. Bedrooms cooler, living room warmer, spare room barely on, which is where most of the savings on a heating bill actually come from.

  • Room-by-room temperatures
  • Works with smart thermostats
  • Existing radiators upgraded

Smart thermostats and app control

Control the heating from your phone, set schedules around your week, and turn it down when nobody is home. We fit Hive, Google Nest and Vaillant vSMART, set them up on your phone before we leave and show you how to use them.

Why a properly installed system is worth it

Comfort

Even warmth in every room, including the ones at the far end of the house, instead of one hot room and a lot of cold ones.

Health

A consistently warm house has less condensation, less damp and less mould, which matters for anyone with asthma or a chest problem.

Efficiency

One efficient heat source feeding the whole house, with the heat going where you want it rather than out through an oversized radiator.

Control

Schedules, room-by-room temperatures and control from your phone with a smart thermostat and smart radiator valves.

Safety

No portable heaters, no open flames in the room. The boiler is sealed, flued outside and checked every year at its service.

Long life

Pipework and radiators last for decades when the water is kept clean with inhibitor and a magnetic filter. That is why we fit both.

Honest advice

If part of your existing system is worth keeping, we keep it. You pay for what your house needs, not for a bigger job.

Qualified and registered

Gas Safe registered, so the boiler, the pipework and the controls are all done by the same team.

Priced before we start

A written quote with the boiler, radiators and scope on it. The invoice matches what you agreed to.

How a central heating job runs

Site visit

We look at the house, the boiler if there is one, and how the pipework can be run. Every room is measured so the heat loss can be worked out properly.

Written quote

The boiler, the radiators and their sizes, the controls, the price and how long it will take. If some of your existing system is worth keeping, we will say so.

Installation

Pipework run under the floors with the boards lifted and put back carefully, radiators hung level, and the boiler and controls fitted and wired.

Commissioning

The system is flushed, dosed with inhibitor and fitted with a filter, then every radiator is balanced so the whole house heats evenly. We set up your controls and show you how they work.

What affects the price

Every house is different, which is why we price after a site visit rather than over the phone.

What we look atWhy it changes the cost
Size of the houseThe number of rooms and radiators, and how much heat each room loses, decides the size of the boiler and every radiator.
New system or upgradeAdding to or improving an existing system is much less work than a full installation in a house that has never had one.
FloorsSuspended timber floors make running pipework straightforward. Solid concrete floors mean chasing or surface runs.
Radiators or underfloorUnderfloor heating costs more to install but suits extensions and new floors, and runs at lower temperatures.
ControlsA basic thermostat, a smart thermostat, or full room-by-room zoning with smart radiator valves.
